Professional gamers compete for $2.8M prize pool in The International

Professional video gaming hits new heights this month as Dota 2 players compete for over $US2.8 million in prize money

Dota 2 is a free-to-play multi-player online battle arena (MOBA) game which lets players fight each other or against computer-controlled enemies. Released on July 9, 2013 (July 18 for OS X and Linux), the game already has 5 million registered players. Dota 2 is a sequel to DotA, which started out as a mod for the game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos back in 2003 and gained a strong following in the gaming community.

The International tournament features teams from all over the world. The prize money for the tournament is being funded by sales of the Interactive Compendium, which lets spectators stay updated and interact with the tournament and their favourite players/teams.

"The Compendium is a living document. From the Qualifiers to the Grand Finals, it will continually grow and evolve as The International progresses, adding new prizes, new polls, and new ways to interact with the tournament. Be a part of Dota 2 history."

The Dota 2 tournament can be watched live in-game or online until August 11.
